Original #1: Gun Control

Gun control has been a hot topic for many years. Estimated to have started after President John F. Kennedy's assassination; the public of the United States became more aware of the lack of control over the sales and possession of firearms in America. America has been divided on the subject with proponents, usually liberals, wanting more laws and regulations and saying that the second amendment was intended for militias and gun violence would decrease. Opponents, usually republicans, argue that the second amendment protects an individual's right to own guns and doesn't add to crime, instead it deter crime from happening.
If we look at mass shootings in the United States, clearly firearms are not being regulated enough because we have had 378 mass shooting throughout the United States just this year alone. So the idea that guns are meant to protect people doesn't make sense because rarely are they used to protect the well being of the owner. Many of the mass shooting in America are either motived by race, religion or sexual orientation hatred. Sure guns can be used for protection, I'm not saying they aren't able to save a life, but for that one life how many lives have they taken by guns? The regulations are put into place to protect American's right to life.
The government has regulations in place but it's not enough. People are still able to bypass background screening because background checks are only required if you purchase a gun through a federal firearms licensee, meaning you could buy a gun online, through a gun show or some private sales without any questions. To add to this, people with mental illnesses are still able to buy guns due to variations in state laws and incomplete record-sharing. Mental health records are overwhelming under-reported to the federal and state databases, leaving a large opening for people to slip through the crack. The government needs to step up and make gun control one of their top prioritizes. They need to start keeping better records and allowing access of those records to every state. Mental health records need to be shared and always reported. Firearms should not be allowed to be purchased without a background check in any state at anytime. These regulations I understand can be annoying or feel like you can't do anything without permission or lack of privacy but in times like these, with mass shooting happening left and right, decreasing the amount of guns on the streets can only bring positive results.

  1. I agree that we need more regulation for gun control, and have witnessed how a mass shooting effects people first hand. The only thing I have to say is what is to stop those that want their guns to buy them illegally. we have seen this in the past the government takes away or regulates something and it goes underground. Becoming a massive trade and big business on the black market, bigger than it is now.
